The
first US Army orders for the BT-13 were in September of 1939. They were
inexpensive and relatively easy to build. Vultee actually ran out of
the Pratt and Whitney Wasp Junior engines they were using to produce
them. Using a Wright Whirlwind in the BT-13 airframe produced the
BT-15. When production ended in 1944, Vultee had built over 11,500
Valiants in only 2 variants. About 100 are around today with roughly
half of them in flyable condition. This one is privately owned. It
carries the markings of the Tuskegee training squadron.
