The Howard Aircraft company
established a name for itself in the 1930s building aircraft for air
races. The DGA line, which stands for "Damned Good Airplane" has a
series of aircraft, including the DGA-15P pictured below. The
P suffix denotes that it is powered by a Pratt and Whitney Wasp Junior
engine rated at 450 horsepower. Howard stopped production for civil
aviation in 1943 to build the DGA series for the US military. DGA-15s
served in several roles for the US Navy, including the GH-1 utility
transport, GH-2 and GH-3 Nightingale air ambluance and NH-1 instrument
trainer. The US Army also flew the DGA-15 as the UC-70. Howard built a
total of 525 DGA-15s.
