The Fokker DR 1 is often
referred to the "Red Baron" airplane. Manfred Von Richtofen said of the
DR 1; "It climbed like a monkey and manuevered like the devil". When it
first arrived in combat, it was thought to be a joke, until Werner Voss
piloted a DR1 to 10 aerial victories in 6 days in September of 1917
against the British. It was a terrible plane in the hands of a novice
pilot. But an experienced pilot could be a formidable foe while flying
the DR1. Only 320 DR1s were made and none survive today. There are
plenty of replicas, like this one owned by Stearman Restorations.
