Douglas A-1H Skyraider (NX39606)
This is
the Douglas AD-6 Skyraider, also called the A-1H Skyraider. This one
was built in 1955 and is the last AD-6 version still flying. It was
originally designated as an AD-6 before being re-designated an A-1H in
1962. It saw service in Vietnam and was flown out of Vietnam to
Thailand on April 29, 1975. Flown today by "Skyraider Bob", it is a
crowd pleaser at shows throughout Southern California. This airplane
was in the movies "Flight of the Intruder" and "We Were Soldiers".
First flown on March 18, 1945, the Skyraider saw extensive use in Korea
and Vietnam. Able to haul a heavy load of ordinance and loiter for
prolonged periods over the target, the Skyraider filled a role that
jets could not perform. They performed Ground Attack, Search and Rescue
and Forward Air Control missions in both wars.
