Supermarine Spitfire
The Supermarine Spitfire
is the most famous and well known British aircraft of WWII. It was
first flown in March of 1936. It was used throughout WWII and went
through a number of changes. Spitfires served well into the 1950s with
the RAF and the Seafire version used by the Royal Navy served into the
1960s. Over 20,000 Spitfires were built along with over 2,500 Seafires.
Today, more than 50 survive in flyable condition. The Spitfire featured
here is a Spitfire LF Mk. IX E that was built in 1944. This is one of
the many warbirds owned by the Planes of Fame museum in Chino.
