Hawker Seafury
The Hawker Sea Fury was
built to answer a wartime request during WWII. The Fury started out as
a modified Tempest. The first flight took place in September of 1944.
There were already orders for 200 land-based Furies for the RAF and 200
Sea Furies for the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. When the war ended,
the orders for the RAF were cancelled while the FAA orders stayed in
place. The first Sea Fury, powered by a Bristol Centaurus engine, first
flew in February of 1945. 860 Sea Furies were built. They were used
early in the war in Korea for ground attack. They were also exported to
several countries. They are popular today among the air racing crowd
and among warbird enthusiasts.
