The
Commonwealth Aircraft Company of Australia made the CAC-25 Winjeel to
fulfill the requirement for a replacement trainer for the Wirraway and
the DeHavilland Tiger Moth as a three seat trainer that was rugged,
inexpensive to operate, easy to fly and easy to maintain. The Winjeel
first flew in February of 1951. Deliveries to the Australian military
began in 1955. The Winjeel (which is an aboriginal word meaning "Young
Eagle") stayed in service with the Australians until he 1990s, serving
as a trainer, forward air control aircraft and communications aircraft.
Many found their way into private ownership as they were decommissioned
from military service. This Winjeel is the only one in the western
hemisphere.
